How to Choose the Right VPN
Picking a VPN can be confusing because every provider claims to be the fastest, most secure, and most private. Here is what actually matters when you are comparing VPN services.
Speed vs. Security
All VPNs slow down your connection a little because your traffic goes through an extra server. The best VPNs (like NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and Surfshark) use modern protocols like WireGuard that keep the slowdown under 10-15%. Cheap or free VPNs often cut corners on speed.
No-Log Policies
A "no-log" VPN does not store records of what sites you visit. This is the most important privacy feature. Look for VPNs that have had their no-log claims verified by independent audits - NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark, and Private Internet Access have all done this.
What to Use a VPN For
- Public WiFi safety - Coffee shops, airports, and hotels have unsecured networks. A VPN stops anyone on the same network from seeing your traffic.
- Streaming content - Watch shows that are only available in other countries by connecting to a server in that region.
- Privacy from your ISP - Your internet provider can see every site you visit. A VPN blocks this.
- Torrenting safely - If you download files via P2P, a VPN hides your IP address from other users in the swarm.
- Avoiding price discrimination - Some websites show different prices based on your location. A VPN lets you check prices from different regions.
Free VPNs vs. Paid VPNs
Free VPNs exist, but most of them make money by selling your data or showing ads - which defeats the purpose. The few trustworthy free options (like ProtonVPN's free tier or Windscribe's free plan) have strict data limits. If you use a VPN daily, a paid plan at $2-5 per month is worth it.
Browse our full list of 52 VPN services above, or filter by free tier to see which ones let you try before you buy.
